ojojona.

Unfortunately, today was my last morning in Las Canadas. Also, our group will be divided in three by our projects, so I have to say bye to people I have become very close to during an intimate game of “Never Have I Ever” two nights ago and a going away party filled with songs and a game of Goodbye Kitty.

For the next seven weeks I will be living with Idalia & family in Ojojona. This is my second of three host families who get to hear me butcher their language and refuse to eat their meat.

I arrive in a big yellow American school bus, the typical transportation I have been taking six days a week to training. My luggage now consists of three more backpacks than I arrived with, a result of my four day trip to a volunteer in Comayagua where we visited a couple two-story malls and indulged in American cuisine (Wendy’s & Subway). It is a painful walk to find this house, to say the least. They shove us off the bus with our stuff and directions to our new homes…in Spanish. The directions also include members of the family, and a little information on the home. According to the paper, I will once again be receiving cold bucket baths and the “bathroom in poor condition” box is checked. Sweet.

With the help of two kind Ojojonan locals, I find the casa blanca. This house is very spacious and fancy. They have eleven birds, two mean dogs, four maids/tortilla makers, three sons and a dad that speak English (although Idalia prohibits it), three fruit trees, and nine tortillas waiting for me. Oh yeah, and AVOCADOS!

the jefes

Everything is better in Honduras, from catcalls to avocados. Maybe it’s because I feel deprived of certain things and have to look for joy in others, I’m not sure. But this avocado was delectable. My new host mom is very nice and speaks slowly and a lot! I listen to her talk for a good hour, take a tour of the house, and excuse myself for a “nap” in my room.
