We’ve already lost one married couple to gastrointestinal problems the wife was having, one good friend of mine to unhappiness and homesickness, and another today to inappropriate content on a blog found by the officials. I think that leaves us at 45, although the number is not what is important. My friend Maune returns to San Bernadino Thursday after medical tests and other documentation. She was the first person I met during this little adventure and we hit it off the second we met. It’s weird to be reminded of the possibility of leaving even exists. I feel like it is my obligation to be here. Not only that, I am having the time of my life. It is almost like reliving high school – only this time I am not the fat chick without friends. Oh, the drama and the gossip…it’s intoxicating. Haha, just kidding. And now we are in the middle of Honduras and I wake up each morning to a family and a language that are both rather unfamiliar.
I received three letters in the mail today, including $20 lipgloss (that’s 7 days of pay here) and some earplugs for those mornings I want to sleep past the roosters that start their ruckus at 3am. After the 4 boxes earlier this month, let me say the letters have been the best thus far. No offense, MOM…I loved the pantry of food you sent and I eat peanut butter on a stick (a.k.a. my finger) every day, but it was just nice reading about life back home. Almost brought a tear to my dry eyes. Almost…
My birthday passed nicely with only one stomach virus, two phone calls, three baleadas, and many text messages that I never received. Two days after I was given an all-expense paid trip to camp on a beach followed by a boat cruise to swim on a deserted island followed by the best meal I have had thus far at a restaurant on Amapala, an island in the Pacific. Big thanks to the government for my awesome birthday present. It was unreal!
