sampling of beds.

After seven rough weeks of training, we finally got to learn where our new homes would be for the next two years. To my surprise, I ended up with a place in the East called Catacamas, Olancho. Olancho is the “wild, wild west” of Honduras. A place where gun-loving macho men ride around on horses with machetes in hand, or at least that is the picture that has been painted in our heads. No one wanted to live in Olancho…especially the women. With that said, my friends Erika, Katie & Tara will be my neighbors in Olancho.

Me, happy
(playing "never have i ever")

I found this out on the fourth and have just now gotten around to writing about it. I have been doing a combination of crying, complaining to everyone, researching the place, and talking with everyone that is willing about Catacamas.

This is what I’ve found out:
• cata = sample, camas = beds…hmm!
• 48,000 people in my city
• best dairy products in Honduras
• plenty of cattle farmers which consist of the tallest, best looking, wealthiest, and most educated men in Honduras
• best baleadas in all of Honduras
• home to the oldest mayan ruins
• giant national park
• close to la moskitia
• river rafting, camping, climbing & hiking opportunities

Me, not so happy

Everyone that has visited talks about how beautiful it is. I am living close to the mountains. And the saying they use for Olancho is – “wide to enter, narrow to leave.” I am excited and looking forward to being the farthest East peach core volunteer. And I have good friends in good sites if I ever decide to “assist” them in their work.

Entonces, vamos a ver…and please buy your tickets to the location of your preference and I will bus my way wherever you decide.
